And for what purpose?
- because they want to manipulate the audience to believe a certain ideology.
Ideology of Formation
- The ideology of the music video 'Formation' is about sticking to your roots, and to show the racial divide.
- makes the audience think, as it is quite an unusual Music video.
Theorists Part 1
Barthes (Media Language) - Created semiotic codes such as Symbolic, Proaitric, Hermeneutic, an example of this is hermeneutic code which is the mystery code can be found in 'Riptide' why is the girl singing the wrong words.
Levi-Strauss (Media Language)- Binary oppositions is where something can't exist without a contrasting thing such as Day and night. Comedy is completely based off binary oppositions.
Theorists Part 2
Hall- (Representation)- Representation is a re-presentation of a group in society through media codes, stereotypes also play a part in this.
Gauntlett- (Representation)- Identity theory- audiences can pick and mix an ideology to suit them best.
Van Zoonen- (Representation) Male Gaze Theory, where females are always sexualised in media products for the views of a heterosexual male. They are used to sell media to a heterosexual male audience. Its a form of objectification and sexualisation.
hooks- (Representation) Feminist theory- 'feminism is for everyone', and the ways in which men are represented have negative impact on men also.
Gilroy- (Representation)- Postcolonialism- Media products still follow colonial ideologies and enforces racial hierarchy.
Riptide- A lot of intertextuality and referential codes of horror, and thriller films.
The low key lighting contrasts with the very dark background, we are positioned, as the audience, in a voyeuristic tracking shot.
Her make-up being smudged could show that she is in a very uncomfortable environment as her make-up isn't immaculate.
Formation- Beyonce is representing the poor black women of south of America. The ideology isn't just saying they are weak but actually strong as they have persevered throughout of history. She is powerful and independent but isolated, her pose is like the statue of liberty.
She has got a chauffeur.

Sonia Livingstone and Peter Lunt- Regulation- the traditional regulations are at risk because of the increasing power of global companies.
David Hesmondhalgh- the cultural industries- media producers try to minimise the risk audiences through vertical and horizontal integration, and by formatting their cultural products (e.g. through the use of stars, genres, and serials)

- Allows newspapers to target people who don't buy newspapers.
- Very quick and easy access.
- Don't have to leave your house.
Disadvantages of Print Based Media
- Quite inconvenient, having to leave your house.
- Generational thing as people have the opportunity to go on the internet such as teenagers.
- Gets to the shop at about 3 so the news will be old.
Disadvantages of Online Media
- need internet to read it.
- people get made redundant and to lose jobs
IPSO regulates the newspapers.
