 Q: According to Claude Levi-Strauss, texts convey their meanings through a system of binary oppositions. Evaluate this structuralist theory. Refer to 'Humans'.

 A: The TV show 'Humans' conveys the meanings through the use of Binary oppositions which a theory constructed by Claude Levi-Strauss. 

 The binary oppositions used to convey the meanings in 'Humans' are things such as the Synths and humans. For example, Laura and Anita could be considered binary opposites due to the fact that Laura is human and Anita is a synth but there is more to it than that. Laura shows that she doesn't like Anita from the very first scene as soon as Laura sees Anita for the first time she is disgusted where as Anita's facial expressions were quite welcoming. This could show that Laura feels intimidated or threatened by Anita's presence in the house as she mazy feel like she is being replaced by her. This conveys meanings of hate and jealousy between the two, mainly from Laura's end of the relationship. Another synth and human binary opposition is between Leo and Anita, Leo looks quite rough and looks very homeless like but he and Anita have some sort of a relationship in a flashback during the first episode but because Anita looks so attractive, this could show a binary opposition that synths are made to be perfect and humans are always going to be imperfect as humans have no control over some factors where as synths are made to look pretty and appealing.

Television is a specialised industry.   Specialist- better than anyone else in one area, weaker in other things. Traditional TV series-  UK drama series 6-8 episodes. UK Comedy series 6 episodes    American Comedy are 20-24 episodes. Humans has 8 episodes. Humans was originally made in Sweden, but was remade for UK audiences. Television in the 21st century. Television has changed considerably since the advent of digital technology in terms of its production, distribution and consumption. It has become a global, rather than a national industry and has become increasingly commercial, with public service broadcasting forced to adapt its structure, role and function. International co-production is growing and broadcasters such as HBO have achieved global success. The TV shows are regulated which links to the theory of Peter Lunt and Sonia Livingstone. Genre and intertextuality Genre- a type of media product governed by implicit rules that are shared by the makers of the product and the audience for it.  Videogames genres: Horror  Sport  Action  Arcade Sci-fi Fantasy  Shooters Racing Music Obscure genres: Giallo Danmaku Shooter Visual Novel Vaporwave Grindcore Hybrid Genres-  The mix of a few different genres to make its own genre. An example of this is grindcore as this is a mix of metal and punk. Another example is a Rom-Com.  Sub-Genres-   a genre within genre. Slashers and Zombies are sub-genres within Horror.
