Key theory 12- Van Zoonen- Male Gaze Theory 

'There is a depressing stability in the articulation of women's politic and communication... The underlying frame of reference is that omen belong in the family and the domestic life and men to the social world of politics and work; that femininity is about care, nurturance and compassion, and that masculinity is about efficiency, rationality and individuality.' - Van Zoonen

Van Zoonen suggests that gender is constructed and that its meaning varies dependant on cultural and historical context.
She also suggests that masculinity as well as femininity is constructed - and that the codes used to construct men 'as a spectacle' are different.

Van Zoonen linked to 'Humans'

• Males constructed through movement (active).
• Leo is the active protagonist.
• Silence and impassively.
• Rarely smiles.  

• In media res- in the middle of the story.

Bonus theory- John Berger

• Men act, Women appear.
• Within a narrative, males drive it forward, women are there to be looked at.

Humans has an ensemble cast.

Humans has a very different narrative as there is a lot of character arcs and story arcs. 

Story Arcs in Episode 1 of 'Humans'

• Hawkins family.
• Leo trying to find Anita. 
• George and Odi.
• The flashback between Leo and Anita.
• Niska in the brothel.
• Fred in the plantation.
• Matilda having a problem with a synth in the house.
• How the synths are produced.
• The detective coming home to a synth carrying his wife around.
• Anita kidnapping Sophie. 

Confrontational scene 

• Shot reverse shot- Shows how confident Leo is and how uncomfortable he is, the other guy is not keeping eye contact.
• Close up- of two leads in the same shot shows that they're discussing something but Leo is threatening him.
• Gestures are aggressive, looks more aggressive due to him being unshaven. 
• Stern and blunt vocal delivery as he wants to find out where Anita is, using physical voice.
• Approaches Sadiq when he is at his most vulnerable, showing that he is smart, tactical and knows how to get answers.
• Binary opposition with the photo of Anita, as Anita is shown to be in nature which could show how pure she is, and it is opposing the roughness of the confrontation.
