Feminism in Riptide/Surrealism/Suspiria

Riptide Feminism 

• Because it is so sexist, kind of a mockery of sexism in music videos e.g Shot of book 'how to photograph girls'. This connotes that women are purely present to be looked at by a heterosexual male audience. 
• Many shots of women, the mise-en-scene of women wearing stereotypical mens clothing. Low angle mid-shot of women holding a pose but not in a sexual way and her gesture connotes power.  
• Mid-shot of blonde women bound in Mise-En-Scene of tight ropes connotes the restrictions that women face in society, and is critical of the notion of women as a 'weaker sex'- connotative of 'being tied down' with maternal responsibilities etc...
• Video lacks anchorage which forces audience to make their own assumptions, simultaneously providing sexual gratification for male heterosexual audience, but also consistently informs the audience that scopophilia is creepy and not ok.  
• ironic representation of patriarchal hegemony
• cross reference to how women are represented in cinema and how negative they are represented. 
• The video is highly polysemic which means it has multiple meanings.
• intertextuality making reference to other forms of media, allows the audience to relate in a whole new way, helps the audience understand it, attracts a bigger audience - Riptide makes reference to 70s horror films.   
• The visuals don't always match up with the lyrics, 'i was scared of dentists' lyric doesn't connote dentists more a torture scene from a horror film.
• stabbed hand- looks exactly like a horror film.
• Desaturation is doen in digital post production. 
• Continuity editing is not relevant is this video, Discontinuity edits in the Riptide music video.
• Eyeline match/ match on action- cut from somebody looking at something to what they are looking at. 
• The use of surrealist images can help the music video to appeal to a wider audience 
• The reasons why it uses reference to this is to give the audience gratification of social interaction.
• The music video need to stick in your head.

Claude Levi-Strauss - Binary Oppositions 

• Underlying meanings in signs and symbols, make sense of the world around us, and one thing can't be without the other.
• Bart Simpson is really naughty, we know this because Lisa is really good.
• Psycho is set an isolated mote, we know this because its first shot is of a city and when its isolated.  
• The producer uses binary oppositions to mainly create comedy. 
• Easy for the producer.

Representation 

Representation is where the producer represents a group of people/issue/event. This further shows the ideology of the producer. 

Why are stereotypes useful? 

• It allows audiences/people to make sense of the world.
• Demonstrates the ideologies of the producer.
• It cultivates ideologies into the audience's head.   

Representation constructs reality. If people keep telling and seeing the same representations and people start treating the stereotypical group. 

Surrealism is an artistic movement that originated in France, Follows the logic un a dreamlike fashion that don't make sense.

Genre Conventions (paradigmatic features of the horror film- Suspiria)

• Props- knives, noose, gloved hands, barbed wire
• Weak and vulnerable protagonist- 'damsel in distress' archetype 
• There are quite a few Women being attacked and killed.
• 70s colours- (Red, blue, white) very vibrant and primary colours, physical lighting stuck filters in front of lights. highly typical of 70s european horror.
• The soundtrack is used for the suspenseful of non-diegetic sound.
• Diegetic females screaming.
• All the men seem to be a typical antagonist and seem very violent.  
• Iconographic features such as cherry red blood.
• Retro-Fashion, particularly 70's, muted colours.
• Vulnerability shown through actions.
