- This image is selling an item of clothing which is the red dress. They are doing this by making the colour of the dress vibrant and also sticks out from the bland background. The woman is in the middle of the shot which shows she is the most important with the dress on. The name is very fancy and is french which could show that it is rich, the name feels romantic. The red dress could show passion and romance. The dress is quite stylish as the woman has a short hair cut which could show she is control as she has a fairly masculine hair cut. signifiers
Key theory- Roland Barthes semiotics- interested in the deeper meaning behind language and audience and how they are intrigued by the product. Signs anything can have meaning, the things that creates meaning. The meaning is created.
the signifier of the word open- commanding something, the start of something new, sense of freedom, up for anything.
Codes- you know or you don't. Lock people out of something, put numbers in an order.
codes refer to any element of media language that creates a meaning for the audience.
Hermeneutic code- also known as the enigma codes, anything within a media product that creates mystery or suspense.
Proairetic code- known as action codes, this refers to something within a media product that suggests that something will happen.
Symbolic codes- something within a media product that creates a deeper meaning for the audience.
The close up on her face is to show detail of the product and how it makes you look better than if you didn't have it. This could also be suggested by the slogan 'maybe she's born with it. Maybe its Maybelline' as it is suggesting that this mascara will make you look better and may people may need this product as they may not have been born with natural good looks.
The light on her face contrasts with the darkness of the mascara which could show how good the product is as it makes your eyes have a shine to them. The font of the product name is quite big so they could be trying to make sure that people can see the brand.
It has a cluttered layout- which could appeal to the working class audience than a high end fashion audience. Aiming for someone with less money. The close up on the face shows her attractive and symbolises her desire to be attractive. The subtext of New York is the setting which could symbolise expensive, busy, made for a busy lifestyle.
This could be saying makeup is essential. The all capitals of Maybelline suggests that the makeup is expensive and is classy and well established. Hermeneutic code suggests the close up of her applying the make up and the mystery of why the model is doing so. The close up of the mascara wand floating over her eye suggests the make up is going to be applied
The cold background contradicts the bright foreground of the models face and the fact that it is cold suggests that she is hot when she is wearing this makeup. The leather jacket shows connotations of independence.
Use of language symbolises quality and trustworthiness. The use of the repeated image of the mascara suggests that they are showing off their product.
